When will we learn to learn that all lives are precious?

Dear Editor,

This month July could be deemed the month of remembrance recognized and celebrated by different sections of our society, which unhappily points to a deeply polarized society.

This condition must be remedied if we as a people are to benefit from the generosity of the Creator and even as we remember the task of every leader, the task of every true patriot, the task of our religious leaders, the task of our teachers, the task of our intellectuals must be to find ways to heal the wounds of the past and to set ourselves on a royal road to peace, prosperity underpinned with cooperation and unity.

This month’s remembrance opened with the horrors of the Sun Chapman where two scores of the comrades from the community of Linden were killed. There is the remembrance of what has been termed the “Ballot Box Martyrs,” on the 18th, where two lost their lives and the brutal killing of policeman Henry at the No.62 Toll Station on the Corentyne.

Then there was the martyrdom of three killed in a similar fashion on the McKenzie-Wismar Bridge. Of course, at the international level, it was in July at Potsdam that the big three (UK Prime Minister Clement Atlee, US President Harry S. Truman and Soviet Leader Joseph Stalin) met, really failing to agree on the spoils of World War II. The irony is the disagreement triggered the destructive cold war which produced millions of martyrs and conflicts in every corner of the globe and I ponder when will we learn? Note even as the same themes, attitudes, distrust, disdain and disrespect for other people continues to be a sort of curse that places a burden on the backs of our people. When will we learn to learn that all lives are precious?
