Government engagement with FITUG
Dear Editor,
I write to commend the Honourable Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning for engaging representatives of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana on Monday, April 20, 2026, on matters affecting the labour sector. Such consultations are encouraging, as they demonstrate a willingness to listen and work collaboratively toward strengthening labour relations in Guyana.
Engagements like these are important in building trust and ensuring that the concerns of workers are heard and considered. The Minister’s efforts to promote a balanced and progressive labour environment are welcomed.
At the same time, it is important that this spirit of engagement is extended to all unions and labour bodies across Guyana, so that no group feels overlooked or excluded from the national conversation on labour issues.
The National Mine Workers Union of Guyana had a scheduled meeting with the Minister on April 17, 2026, to discuss several matters of concern to workers. Unfortunately, the meeting was postponed at the last minute due to an urgent Cabinet engagement. This was communicated by the Minister’s Personal Assistant, who also conveyed an apology and indicated that a new date would be arranged. However, to date, a rescheduled meeting has not yet been communicated to the Union.
In the interest of ensuring that the issues were still brought to the Ministry’s attention, the Union left a copy of the matters it had intended to discuss with the Minister’s secretary on April 17, 2026.
- Among the key concerns raised were:
The urgent appointment of a substantive Chief Labour Officer.
- The establishment of an Industrial Relations Tribunal, or Labour Court, to address disputes in a fair and timely manner.
iii. The re-establishment of the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board, which plays a vital role in supporting proper representation within the labour movement.
These are not just institutional concerns, but matters that directly impact the lives, rights, and well-being of workers across Guyana. While we once again acknowledge and applaud the Minister’s engagement with the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana, we respectfully express the hope that similar opportunities for dialogue will be extended to all unions, including the National Mine Workers Union of Guyana. Inclusive and consistent engagement will go a long way in strengthening confidence in the labour system and ensuring that every worker’s voice is heard.
