Maikoo, Bulkan, Rodrigues and Verwey among winners on opening day

Kaieteur Sports – The 39th National Lotteries Juniors Caribbean Squash Championship in St. Vincent commenced with a burst of enthusiasm as our young squash players showcased their skills on the opening day of the tournament. The event features captivating draws for Junior Boys and Girls in the Under 11’s, 13’s, 15’s, 17’s, and 19’s categories.
Team Guyana wasted no time in leaving a strong impression on Day one. In the Boy’s U17 category, Guyanese Shiloh Asregado set the tone with an impressive 3-0 victory over Yohann Marshock, displaying his determination and talent on the court. Chad De Abreu also delivered a stunning performance, securing a clean 3-0 win against Oneil Sprott. Another remarkable match featured Josh Verwey, who defeated Cayman’s Alexander Dailey 3-1, adding to Guyana’s list of triumphs. Demetri Lowe engaged in a thrilling battle against T&T’s Marcus Camps-Campins, ultimately claiming a hard-fought victory with a scoreline of 3-2. Louis Da Silva defeated his fellow countryman Asregado (11-6, 11-2, and 11-4) in his opening match at the 2023 edition.
Over in the Boys 15 category, Richard Rodrigues displayed his prowess, overcoming Dru Samuel in a closely contested match with scores of 12-10, 11-8, 8-11 and 11-1. Meanwhile, Blake Edwards executed a dominant performance, trouncing De’ron Lewis 3-0. In the Girl’s U15 division, Malia Maikoo also registered another win for Team Guyana; defeating Vincentian Niara-Skye John 3-0.
The Boys U13 division witnessed Jacob McDonald continuing the winning streak for Guyana. He delivered a wonderful performance, defeating Aiden DeFreitas with an impressive score of 11-4, 11-2, and 11-5, proving himself as a rising star in the tournament. While young, Kaylee Lowe also secured a 3-0 victory against Cayman’s Kaylee Pierre in the Girl’s U13 category. Not to be outdone, young Ethan Bulkan demonstrated his talent in the Boy’s U11 category by making light work of Barbados’ Finn Graham, securing a convincing 11-1, 11-2, 11-9 victory.
Meanwhile in the afternoon session, Zion Hickerson made a strong comeback to defeat Ethan Webster of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0 in a thrilling U11 encounter, after facing a defeat earlier against New Zealander Bodhi Philp. Justin Ten Pow later returned to overcome Ross D’Juran (11-7, 11-4, 11-1) in his final U13 match on the opening day. D’Juran returned shortly after and defeated Jacob McDonald 11-3, 11-2, 11-5, as Nicholas Verwey stunned Barbadian Aidan Parris (8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-3) in his U19 matchup. Unfortunately, Kirsten and Tiana Gomes’ matches were rescheduled for late Saturday evening due to their late arrival caused by logistical issues.
Up to press time, a remaining four matches featuring local players were scheduled to be played, including the Girls U17 matchup between Safirah Sumner and Bermuda’s Rose Paulos, and Boy’s U17 division clash between Asregado and Barbados’ Armaan Suleman, those results will be featured in Monday’s edition of the Kaieteur Newspapers. The tournament concludes today with thirteen exciting matches.
