Kaieteur News – The first ever ‘Locsfest’ that was held in the mining town of Linden was deemed a major success, as the event saw hundreds of persons attending to indulge in the variety of activities that were on offer. The event which was promoted by Linden’s loctician and make-up artiste Setra Oselmo, aimed to celebrate the richness and beauty of Rastafarian culture. This was achieved through music, food, fashion, hair designs and other creative expressions of art. The ‘ice, gold and green’ colours radiated within the Linden Themed Park along with stunning decorationsthat were complemented by the well-dressed patrons and the many colourful booths.
The event which was held in observance of International Locs Day comprised an exhibition of small businesses within the mining town, ranging from boutiques, bakeries, interior designers and creative artists, an ital and cook-up competition, a conscious concert, a hair and fashion show, a loctician competition and other cultural displays. Both organisers and small business participants expressed satisfaction with how the highly anticipated venture turned out. Persons are already anxious for next year’s activity. Oselmo said the event was successful in redefining interlocking styles and care as well as the maintenance of natural hair.
Rastafarianism is often seen as an olden way of life marked by chanting and herbs usage, but Oselmo said ‘Locsfest’ made strides in erasing this negative perception by showcasing a beautiful culture that can be embraced by all. Rastafarianism goes beyond interlocked hair but also embraces a lifestyle that is natural, healthy and mentally conscious. “This is something that we want to birth or grow Linden people from.” Oselmo said she hopes the event becomes a signature one as well as a major tourism attraction.
Some sponsors of this year’s event include Curelean, Nico Consulting, Sister to Sister Beauty, Beharry Lumber Yard and the Region 10 Tourism Authority. Oselmo would like to thank all the sponsors for their kind contributions towards the success of this inaugural event and looks forward to more corporate support next year.
