(Kaieteur News) – The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region One received 18 bids for the construction of three new primary schools in the communities of Five Star, Big Creek and Eye Lash.
According to information provided on the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) website, eight bids were received for the construction of Big Creek Primary, five for Eye Lash Primary, and five for Five Star Primary School.
The RDC in its Invitation For Bids (IFB), stated that the engineer’s estimate for each project is $38,011,719, bringing the total amount to $114,035,157.
Of the eight contractors which bid for the Big Creek Primary School project, one contractor bid amount was identical to the government’s engineer estimate of $38,011,719. For that project also, one contractor bid above at $89 million, while the remaining six bid between $33,361,006 and $38,010,000 to build the school.
In its IFB also, the region noted that three new teacher’s living quarters will be constructed to compliment the new primary schools, at an estimated cost of $14,419,512 each.
Kaieteur News reported that the projects will form part of the region’s $9.1 billion budgetary allocation, of which $4.6 billion was allotted for education delivery.
During the consideration of budget estimates back in February, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand disclosed that these communities earmarked for primary school, never before had schools for its children.
She noted that these are mining areas where people settled. She said government is now establishing schools so children could pursue their education.
