Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) 2023 National Championship came to a thrilling end on Sunday in Linden with the prestigious Elite/Senior’s Road Race championship event, following a fantastic time-trails on Saturday which took place at the K&K Gas Station Circuit in Mahaica.
Sunday saw United We Stand cyclist Briton John pedaling his way home to clinch the 2023 Elite Road Race championship. Robin Persaud with another impressive performance claimed second-place, while Kwame Ridley, who had the fastest time in the Master’s time-trial event, settled for third-place.
However, in the time-trials event held on Saturday, which featured the Master’s, Senior’s Individual, Junior’s and Female’s divisions’, outstanding performers such as Kwame Ridley from Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycle Club (KARCC), KFC Evolution’s Curtis Dey and Robin Persaud, Christopher Griffith and others setting up an exciting end on the final day of the 2023 National Championship.
In a brief recap of the time-trial event, Curtis Dey, from Team Evolution, achieved the fastest time during his time-trial meet in the senior’s division. Dey completed the 14-mile ride with a time of 32 minutes and 15 seconds. His teammate, Christopher Griffith, secured the second-best time. As Arjune Sookhai claimed third place. While in the Masters category, KARCC’s star cyclist, Kwame Ridley secured first place with an impressive time of 33 minutes and 59 seconds. Segan Hubbard followed in second place with a time of 35 minutes and 21 seconds, while Jaikaran Sookhai claimed third place at 36 minutes and 17 seconds.
Over in Women’s side of things, Denise Jeffrey emerged as the winner; clocking the best time of 21 minutes and 17 seconds, followed closely by Clivecia Spencer in second place, who finished in second with a time of 22 minutes and 4 seconds and Abigale Jeffrey at 22 minutes and 38 seconds in third at a time.
Among the junior cyclists, Aaron Newton achieved the best time in their seven-mile ride, finishing in 16 minutes and 53 seconds. Although there were no separate Juvenile category, juveniles were allowed to ride with the juniors for the experience. Juvenile riders such as Alexander Leung, Sidwel Sandy, Toel Noel and Alex Newton participated alongside the juniors, with Leung achieving a notable time of 16 minutes and 25 seconds.
