Kaieteur News – A contingent of nine local boxers left our shores Thursday last for St Lucia to compete at St Lucia’s Champion of Champions Boxing championship which concluded on Sunday at the Vigie Sports Complex in Castries.
The list of boxers had outstanding showing on foreign soil with a couple of noteworthy performances from Tiquan Sampson, Alesha Jackman, Shaquan James and Tifina Barker, they showed great tenacity and dominance in the ring as Guyana came second to the host (St Lucia) finishing with twenty-four points.
Our young pugilists received six golds, two silvers and one bronze. Shaquan James, Tiquan Sampson, Alesha Jackman, Emannuel Pompey, Kevon Harris and Tifina Barker were the gold medalists, while Quinie Boyce and Jamal Eastman copped silvers as well as a lone bronze medal from Brian Harris.
‘Both our juniors and seniors went out and represented favourably, stating their claims as they reckon for future success. Competing at championships of this nature are extremely beneficial to help elevate the junior and youth boxers in the region. It also augurs well for the athletes to gain much-needed experience against varying fighting styles. With the increasing number of international exposure and local competitions; we are seeing massive improvements among the boxers,’ Coach Sebert Blake had posited.
“Team Guyana went into the competition with the expectation of achieving nine golds. Unfortunately for us, we had a few decisions that went against us, especially with the Jamal Eastman fight. Many may agree to him winning that fight but in the end, the judge’s decisions are final. Nevertheless, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is pleased with the results thereof,” Blake informed.
“Looking forward, we had a great showing in St Lucia, the camaraderie between the athletes were excellent, the support was enormous. Congratulations to the team on their overall performance. Special thanks to the GBA President Steve Ninvalle and his administration as well as the coaches (Sebert Blake and Clifton Moore), who worked hardly putting together the team and prepared them for this level of competition,” the seasoned boxing coach pointed out.
