Kaieteur News – The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Men’s Senior Inter County Four Day cricket tournament, round two continued at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda. The match between Demerara Men and GCB’s Select XI, Demerara Men resuming on 360-8 on Day Two with Shamar Yearwood 94 and Steven Sankar 11 runs not out. Demerara added 59 runs to their overnight score before they were eventually dismissed for 419 in the first innings. Jonathan Rampersaud finished with 3-82 as Wong, La Rose and Cameron grabbed two wickets apiece.
Yearwood started the scoring on Day 2 with a beautiful cut-shot; caressing a delivery from Demetri Cameron for four runs in front of point-position as the ball ran down to the boundary as Yearwood moved to 98* on a sunny Sunday morning at the GCC Bourda. Shortly after that, he followed with a glided stroke down to third-man for two runs to get to his milestone; a delightful century from the young left-handed batter.
Not long after, Carlos La Rose brushed the edge of his bat on the way through to first-slip. La Rose finally got his man. Yearwood out caught on 105 runs, he batted for 174 balls and 195 minutes; hitting 7 fours and 4 sixes.
Demerara Men now 397-9, Omar Torrington joined Sankar at the middle, Demerara immediately pushed the score to 401-9 as Torrington got off the mark with a gentle push down to the third-man boundary for four runs. Torrington was last to depart; caught at mid-wicket. Demerara dismissed for 419 from 101.4 overs including 22 extras with Steven Sankar unbeaten on 46 runs.
Select XI with a first innings target of 419. Rajendra Chandrika took first strike for Select XI, immediately getting off the mark as he steered a ball down to third-man at the end of the first over Select XI 4-0.
However, Demerara bowlers kept the Select XI opening batters quiet in the first hour before Richie Looknauth got the break through; removing Oswin Blair for five runs. Chandrika and Alvin Mohabir took the score 34-1 before the call of lunch with 9 wickets remaining. Chandrika on 24 not out with Mohabir on 4.
After the lunch break, Ashmead Nedd struck straight away, trapping Chandrika LBW; trying to playing back to a straight delivery from Nedd, Select XI 40-2 with both opening batters back in the hut. Twenty-three overs into the Select XI first innings, they crumbled to 81-6 as Alvin Mohabir out caught at first-slip, Jeremiah Scott and Shane Wong lost their wickets cheaply as the Demerara spinners (Nedd and Looknauth) made batting difficult for Select XI top order batters; the pair gathered 3 wickets apiece inside the first hour of play after lunch.
Nedd later took his fourth scalp; rattling the stumps of David Williams for five runs as Select XI tail started to wag at 82-7. La Rose and Rampersaud had a brief eight wicket partnership which yielded 38 runs, pushing the score to 102-7 at the thirty-second over. Torrington later broke the partnership between Rampersaud and La Rose. La Rose was bowled; offering no shot to a straight ball, having his off stumps knocked back for 21 runs. At tea Select XI 137-8 with 20 extras.
Select XI were eventually bowled out for 166 in 46.2 overs with 21 extras. Nedd finished 5-43 from 15.5 overs, 4 maidens, while Looknauth grabbed 3-51.
Demerara later returned with the bat, in the second innings with a lead of 253 runs. Sachin Singh and Narendra Persaud opened the batting as they lost a few early wickets. Narendra Persaud departed early; fishing at a swinging delivery from La Rose. Demerara Men found themselves at 9-2, as Sachin was trapped in front his stumps; out LBW to Cameron. Raymond Perez also lost his wicket to Cameron; out caught-behind for 8 runs. Ronaldo Ali Mohammed followed shortly after, caught on long-off boundary. Demerara 33-4 at this time, Chris Barnwell joined Akshaya Persaud at the crease, they look to resuscitate the Demerara’s second innings; kept scoring meaningful runs as they push the score to 92-4 at the end of play Akshaya Persaud unbeaten on 25 runs and Barnwell on 36 runs not out. Demetri Cameron took 2-23 and Carlos La Rose 2-20.
Play continues today with Day Three action with Demerara Men 94-4 from 25 overs in the second innings with a lead of 347 runs.
