Kaieteur News – Born and bred in Skeldon, Region Six Ashmini Rohit- Husein is a woman of many talents. For seven years, she has been the owner of ‘Jessi’s Touch of Elegance’, ‘Husein’s Enterprise’, as well as ‘Cake N Things.Gy’. This young woman has been doing it all at just 24 years of age.
Though blessed with many talents, it has not always been a smooth road to her success. Even after losing her beloved husband who was a major supporter of her dreams, Rohit-Husein is still determined to make a name for herself.
For her business, ‘Jessi’s Touch of Elegance’, she specializes in bridal make-up, henna, bridal bouquets, and more. ‘Husein’s Enterprise’ supplies party bags, gift bags, gift wrapping paper, photo frames, cake boxes and much more items too. Over at her ‘Cakes N Things.Gy’ Instagram page, you can find an array of baked sweet treats, such as her amazingly creative cakes, cookies, cupcakes, éclairs and a quite other mouthwatering bites to choose from.
In an exclusive interview, she told the WaterFalls that her businesses have been doing well, particularly during the June-August wedding season. In fact, she was fully booked! Husein said that she is also booked out for November and December, a clear indication that she has been providing quality service to customers in her hometown Berbice and her marital hometown of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
But while there were many positives, the rocky road did not miss her. Her businesses took a blow in the year 2021 mainly because of the pandemic, and she also suffered a health scare after contracting pneumonia. It was tough for Rohit-Husein, but she had her husband supporting all the way, he was a source of motivation when she felt like throwing in the proverbial towel.
“Last year was very hard, I was at a point where I wanted to give up but my husband pushed me to continue…”
Added to that, she said that she moved from Berbice to the East Coast and that also contributed to her losing alot of her Berbice clientele, but she found a way to rebuild.
“I went out and got a full time job at Glamour Beauty as a Beauty Consultant, and I built a customer relationship with a lot of people,” She said.
As things began to look up for her and her businesses, there was another blow, she lost her husband. He was her biggest fan, her support system, and her motivator. But again, it was another setback that she vowed to overcome.
“I do not plan on quitting or giving up because it’s something my husband always wanted me to do.” She said he helped her out with deliveries and just being there, keeping her going.
“There were times he told me not to charge transportation and he took me places without even charging gas money. He spoiled me and was very helpful and supportive…I plan on pushing harder.”
What sets Rohit-Husein apart from the rest you might ask? Unlike other businesses, Rohit-Husein doesn’t just offer one service, she is an entire package!
“You don’t need to hire a makeup artist, and then hire somebody to get your wedding cake. When I work for brides I don’t only do the makeup and hair, I set outfits…I stay back if they need me to stay back.”
With affordable prices such as $10,000-$15,000 for bridal makeup and more, it’s no guessing why customers choose her for impeccable service at a fraction of the cost.
“I’m all about work and making my own money because growing up my father taught me to never depend on nobody for anything, not even him.”
In the next five years, the highly motivated businesswoman plans on having her businesses in one centralized location, and she also has plans to open a cafe joint in Skeldon, Berbice for families to enjoy.
On the lighter side, the Berbician says to pass her time or when she feels overwhelmed, she paints beautiful paintings. They are however, not for sale.
As her plans unfold, she says she keeps her husband in memory and is sure that he is watching over her proudly.
Husein recently held a successful ‘Halloween Treats’ sale in collaboration with another small business, ‘MArt’, owned and operated by Marissa Foster in Rose Hall Town. She told the Waterfalls that she looks forward to more collaborations of this nature.
