Keen competition in battle for latter stages

Kaieteur News- Men’s Singles- This year’s GBTI competition had fierce battles in the Men’s open category. The new generation of juniors are beginning to make shockwaves in the draw by pushing the veterans through long gruelling matches. In the round of 16s Benjettan Osborne fought off the big groundstrokes of Ricky Romanscindo by relying on his ability to create sharp angles and move the younger player off the court. Osborne won the match 6-3 / 3-6 / 6-0.
Gerald Scotland took out veteran player Harry Panday 6-1 / 6/3, while Saevion David-Longe took out the junior lefty Isaiah Cambridge 7-6(4) / 6-3.
The quarter-finals had suspenseful action. Donnie Anderson defeated Harvey Stoll 6-3 / 6-0, while defending champion Miguel Garcia dismissed the former champion, Jonathan Fagundes 6-0 / 6-0.

The anticipated clash of the former junior prodigy, Gavin Lewis, and the rising junior star, Gerald Scotland, lived up to its expectation. The two traded heavy topspin groundstrokes, spectacular volleys and intense rallies. However, Lewis edged Scotland out in the first set. There appeared to be the turning of the tide in the second set when Scotland raced to a 4-1 lead and an ailing Lewis had to take a medical timeout due to an injury during the set point. Lewis slowly crept back into the game and fought off two set points on Scotland’s serve which took the second set into a tiebreak. Lewis’ experience and grit rewarded him with 6-4 / 7-6(4) win over the promising Scotland.
Benjettan Osborne also had a battle against Saevion David-Longe. In the first clash between the two, David-Longe pushed Osborne to the limit with his style of clean hitting and ability to slice. Osborne won 6-7(4) / 6-2 / 6-3 to face off against

Miguel Garcia clashed with Gavin Lewis in the first semi final match. The two displayed spectacular shots. Balls flew left, right and kissed the lines in some closely contested points. The players described the match as physically and emotionally exhausting. Despite the efforts of Lewis to gain momentum, Garcia outplayed him to 6-0 / 6-2 to book a spot in the final.

Ladies’ Singles
Semi final – Norella Jordan defeated Devalue Arjune vs 6-1 / 6-1 and her younger sister Renola Jordan defeated Paula Kalekyezi 6-4 / 6-0.
Girls Finals
Renola Jordan and Paula Kalekyezi went toe to toe in the girls final. It was a true test of strength and mental defence as Jordan raced to a comfortable lead and had three match points on her serve but Kalekyezi dug deep and produced exceptional shots off the backhand under pressure points to force a third set. She dominated 4-6 / 7-6 / 10-6 to be crowned the GBTI Girls Champion.
Boys Singles
Semi final – Gerald Scotland defeated Joel Singh 6-2 6-0, while Hayden Mentore received a walkover from Nathan DeNobrega.
Men’s Novice Singles
Semi finals Harvey Stoll beat Vinish Etwaroo 6-1
Ridhwaan Kasim beat Immanuel Barker 6-2
Novice Medley Doubles
H. Stoll / K. Hulefled beat O. St. Kitts / R. Kasim 6-4 to secure the title of Novice Medley Doubles winner.
Ladies Novice Singles
Quarterfinal – Karen Hulefeld beat Mellissa St. Kitts 6-3
Khadija Fyffe beat O’Shea St. Kitts 6-4
Men’s Doubles
