Knight Riders beat Tridents In WCPL Opener
Kaieteur News – Trinbago Knight Riders made a statement on the opening day of the Limacol WCPL 2026, defeating defending champions Barbados Tridents Women by 21 runs at Kensington Oval.
Sent in after the Tridents won the toss, the Knight Riders overcame an early scare to post a challenging 155 before a disciplined bowling effort restricted the three-time defending champions to hand the Knight Riders an emphatic opening victory.
The Tridents nearly made the perfect start when seamer Shawnisha Hector appeared to have caught and bowled. However, the delivery was called a no-ball, handing Bhatia a crucial reprieve.
The Indian opener made the most of her second chance, combining with Laura Harris to lay the foundation for a strong Knight Riders PowerPlay. Harris was particularly destructive, smashing a 19-ball 38, while Bhatia contributed a valuable 35.
The opening partnership finally came to an end in the final over of the Power Play, but the damage had been done, with the Knight Riders racing to 71 runs from their opening six overs.
The Tridents turned to four different bowlers during the Power Play but struggled to contain the scoring. Suzie Bates and Quiana Joseph then changed the momentum, combining for five wickets to keep Barbados firmly in the contest.
The Knight Riders eventually lost their final wicket to be bowled out for 155, leaving the Tridents with a challenging but achievable target.
Barbados made a positive start to the chase, with their top four batters all getting starts. Debutant Kiran Navgire showed flashes of danger, scoring 28, while Joseph struck 25 from just 21 balls.
However, the Knight Riders’ pace attack gradually squeezed the life out of the chase. Deandra Dottin and Shikha Pandey combined to claim five wickets, breaking the back of the Tridents’ pursuit.
With the pressure mounting, the spinners mopped up the lower order to complete an impressive all-round bowling performance and seal a 21-run victory.
The result gives the Knight Riders an ideal start to their WCPL 2026 campaign, while the defending champions will be left to regroup after being outplayed in the second half of the contest.
