BCB/ Brian Ramphal 2022 Awards Ceremony…
Kaieteur News – West Indies players Romario Shepherd and Shemaine Campbelle on Sunday last copped the Male and Female Cricketer of the Year Awards, respectively, when the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) held its annual Brian Ramphal Awards Ceremony at the St. Francis Community Developers.
The West Indies duo along with fellow West Indies players Veersammy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie, Isai Thorne, Kevin Sinclair, Sheneta Grimmond, Shabika Gajnabi were among the main awardees at the impressive awards ceremony which saw a large turnout of players, cricket officials and parents.
The audience included Member of Parliament Faizul Jafarally and test legends Dr. Desmond Haynes, Sir Andy Roberts, Jimmy Adams and Roland Butcher.
The gala ceremony included special musical performance from the Cofona Musical Band of New Amsterdam, which had the crowded hall rocking to songs like ‘Rally round the West Indies’ and ‘We are the Champions’.
BCB President Hilbert Foster provided a comprehensive report of the overall history of the board which was founded in 1939 with the main objective of promoting the game in the Ancient County.
The Board over the years has produced a total of nineteen test players and numerous others for the West Indies at the junior, 20/20, ODI and female levels. Foster stated that despite the Covid pandemic, the BCB was able to complete over twenty tournaments including several one-day grassroot tournaments.
Among the other programmes completed in an impressive calendar of activities were the Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh Coaching Programme, historic coaching manual, Youth Information Booklets, coaching skills, educational grants, University of Guyana scholarship and the distribution of gears, schoolbags and bicycles to players.
Other projects included distribution of grass cutters, catching cribs, while the BCB also purchased five cricket pitch covers for distribution across the county. Cricket clubs also benefitted from donation of cricket balls, scorebooks and stumps.
The BCB also provided financial grants to three sub associations and the Berbice Umpire Association. Among other programmes hosted were Tribute to Retired Cricketers, Tribute to Umpires, Tribute to CSEC Students, Mother of the Year, Father of the Year, Four Social Skill Seminars, Four Mini Cricket Academies and a Pictorial review magazine.
Member of Parliament Faizal Jaffarally congratulated the BCB for being a very progressive cricket board and for leading the way in cricket development in the country. The BCB during the ceremony honoured eleven outstanding cricket administrators and presented gears to eight cricket clubs with youth section under its Cricket Kindness Project. The clubs were Achievers, Cotton Tree, Guymine, Mt. Sinai, Rose Hall Canje, Radha Krishna, Scottsburg and Skeldon. The BCB also launched a county wide second division tournament with Dave West Indian Imports of New York.
Five persons also received the BCB highest awards- The Tribute to Heroes.
CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams gave the feature address in the absence of CWI President Ricky Skerritt, who was unable to attend due to overseas travel to India. Adams provided his audience with a comprehensive report of CWI developmental plans. The former West Indies Captain also congratulated the Berbice Board on its investment in education and urged the youths to grab the opportunities been presented to them.
