Dear Editor,
Mr. Kit Nascimento markets himself and very successfully as a grand communications specialist and therefore knows how to join a public discussion. If, indeed, he is furthering the discourse, there would be no need for him to continually reference what has been stated or argued before. As a communications expert, he is aware that letters to the press should be both concise and precise.
A letters column in a publication invites various and differing opinions, and is important to the media’s responsibility in a democratic society.
Whereas an Editor’s Note is used to correct errors and factual mistakes made by letter writers, it cannot be used to “correct” an opinion, the expression of which is part of a society’s constitutional right to free speech.
The use of the Editor’s Note in this instance is unnecessary, appears partisan, and begs the question as to Kaieteur News’ objectivity and its adherence to ethical standards of journalistic professionalism.
Sincerely,
Ryhaan Shah
