Oct 27, 2021 Letters
Dear Editor,
As a vivid reader of your Letter Column in your dailies, my interest was particularly roused by the (25.10.2021) letters from GHK Lall, Aubrey C. Norton and P. Lall; all of which in my view were clothed within the thematic scheme of race diversity as oppose to race-based activism and race-partitioning: causing me to now “cut my teeth” as a first time contributor.
GHK Lall stressed the merits of diversity in the composition in the membership of political parties as opposed to the race-based option, and particularly so at this point in time of Guyana’s history as its demography becomes infused by multi-ethnic immigrants. GHK Lall’s postulation finds acquiescence with Aubrey Norton who declared that his once preferred choice for leadership of the PNC/R party was Winston Murray, and for whom he campaigned, notwithstanding Murray’s Indo-Guyanese ethnicity.
Quite contrary to Vassan Ramracha’s, (KN. 27.10.2021) support for the idea of advocacy for the partition Guyana along race lines, P. Lall has referenced the recent rapes, killings, burnings and desecration against Hindus in the partitioned Bangladeshi State, formerly known as East Pakistan.
Bangladesh, like many other partitioned countries whether partitioned along ethnic or religious lines, has not proven to be a desirable outcome away from discord. The case in point is one in which Bangladesh was born out of the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, preceded by barbaric genocide on the minority Hindu population in East Pakistan. The partitioning of Pakistan led to the creation of Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan. Today the score remains unsettled giving rise to P. Lall’s clarion call in support of diversity. I also share P. Lall’s belief that the systemic decimation of Hindus in partitioned Bangladesh is not finding the kind of media coverage that would provide fodder for Guyanese to celebrate and give thanks for our diversity as promoted by our National Motto: One People One Nation One Destiny.
The media given its profound influence in shaping society’s outlook; devolves upon it a corresponding responsibility to manage conflict and diffuse tensions. In this context, the media is hereby instigated to Emphasise Ethnic Diversity: De-emphasise Race-Based Activism.
Respectfully,
B. Joseph
