Dear Editor,
Please permit me space to express my disappointment at what our National Stadium at Providence looks like. I love cricket, and hardly do I miss matches; imagine my elation when I was told that West Indies and Pakistan were playing.
Tickets were purchased and protocols followed as we entered the Stadium, but the feeling of excitement was short-lived as the portable toilets I passed on my way to the red stand were stink and open, there was tissue on the ground and the rain didn’t help, the actual stadium washrooms under the red stand were out of order, so you know that meant no sink right!
As we got up to the stand, the staff were courteous but the bold X, spray painted on the seats were our guide of where not to sit; that’s understandable, but spraying seats isn’t a smart idea, since its classified as defacing.
The stadium was filthy, masks were all over and some seats had tissues and masks that were wet (maybe from the rain), but weren’t the stands supposed to be cleaned after the previous matches? The walkways were also moss filled, one grandma slid on her way up; lucky for her a kind policeman grabbed her just in time.
In all my years of visiting the stadium, I’ve never had such experiences. Don’t let’s blame the rain, or COVID – the stadium is overlooked by a director. My question is where is the person or body responsible? Recently in the news I read that Mr. Anthony Xavier hadn’t his contract renewed and now there is a new body in place, but clearly the persons aren’t doing their job. I challenge anyone who visited the stadium during the tournament to dispel my claims.
As a proud Guyanese and a lover of sport, I long to see the Providence Stadium return to what it was – if quick action cannot be taken then I say, Bring Back Mr. Xavier!
Yours truly,
