DEAR EDITOR,
Something has to be said about a country where individuals in power make surprise visits and find people who are partly responsible for the control of water in and out of Georgetown during heavy rainfall, sleeping or absent-still employed. It says a whole lot. In Guyana, we have ineffective road closure signs placed at the main gateway into Duncan Street, with lots of space for vehicles to still pass and create more confusion. Even better – bribery being expected to be given as the norm at the lower levels of government (in some agencies!).
With the exception of South Africa, and just one or two other surrounding countries, the examples provided, sad to say; are definitely mirror images of the normal inefficiencies in most African countries. Just the way of getting things done. Which brings me to the article, “Getting an ID card in Guyana”, as it reflects on GECOM as published in KN on July 3. That article is spot on and unfortunately is a snapshot of how unintelligently backward we are in conducting some of our affairs. No number of upcoming posh hotels will change the perception people have. I, for one, am being affected by this primitive system. Who is in charge? I am curious to see if someone in that organisation is bold enough to clearly and confidently articulate why the existing process makes any kind of sense. This issue is not one that needs parliamentary intervention. The major decision makers who are obviously incapable of making clear cut “modern” efficient stream-lined decisions that also involve modern computerised systems, should go – PLEASE. They bring no value-added to the image of Guyana, only the contrary!
Yours truly,
C. Kansi

By Sir Ronald Sanders (Kaieteur News) – Haiti’s plight must not be forgotten because it is no longer a regular feature of international headlines. The suffering has not diminished.
