Kaieteur News – While investigation to determine the origin of the fire at the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School is still ongoing, the school’s Alumni Association on Wednesday said that it pledges to help rebuild and refurnish the school.
The association, in a statement, said that it is “stunned and devastated by the June 19th fire which destroyed a significant section of the school.”
It said that it recognized that the loss of equipment and access to the school, means that over 500 students will be unable to access learning opportunities, and that its loss amounts to an insurmountable amount which has an immediate impact on the school’s and the student’s progress. In this regard, the alumni stated, that they intend to provide financial assistance to the school, while contributing to its stability and facilitating an environment of academic excellence.
Further, the Association also highlighted that it will lead the effort of fundraising for the rebuilding of the school’s computer and science labs, also the home-economics department. They will also be launching a “GoFundMe” account to assist students with their education.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Education commenced work at the school, following a meeting held on Monday with the students and parents who requested to use the auditorium to sit their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations since it was not damaged by the fire. Also work is being done to restore electricity to the undamaged sections of the building.
During Monday’s meeting, the Ministry was looking at alternatives for the 65 students to write their exams. The students had requested to use the auditorium instead. The Education Minister, Priya Manickchand told them that the Ministry would have to acquire full clearance from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to ensure the space is safe.
When contacted for a comment on Wednesday, the Fire Service told this publication that clearance will be given once they investigate that there will be no threat of a re-ignition. GPL stated that they are awaiting a GFS report, to show if it is electrical of origin before any clearance is given.
