(Kaieteur News) – The 30-year-old driver who was involved in the fatal accident last month at Rome Access Road, East Bank Demerara which claimed the life of Kevin Roache, was charged on March 31 with the offence of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.
The accused, Surendra Bessesar, of Little Abary, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, where the indictable charge was read to him.
He was charged under Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02. Bessesar was not required to plead.
According to information provided by the police on Friday, bail was granted in the sum $300,000, with conditions that he reports to the police on the last Friday of every month and lodge his passport at the court until the matter is completed.
The matter was adjourned to May 20, 2026.
It was reported that 24-year-old Roache, a construction worker of Lot 99, Second Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, lost his life after he was struck by a truck along the Rome Access Road.
According to a police report, Bessesar was driving a motor lorry with a trailer attached, heading west along the southern driving lane of the public road behind Roache who was riding a bicycle.
Police stated that while in the vicinity of Farm/ Supply, the driver reportedly overtook the pedal cyclist, and the left-side rear wheel of the trailer came into contact with the rear wheel of the cycle.
This caused Roache to lose control and ended up under the trailer, where the wheel ran over his left foot. The police stated that medical personnel were on the scene and a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital pronounced Roache dead at the scene.
“A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver, found no trace of alcohol in his breath,” the police reported.
He was taken into police custody and an investigation was launched.
