Juggling two businesses while studying psychology…
By Sueann Wickham
Kaieteur News – For some persons, being gainfully employed, while pursuing studies can be an almost impossible task. However, for 20-year-old, Daleiah Barker, taking on such a challenge is pretty much second nature.
Barker has been efficiently juggling two businesses, as she pursues her studies in psychology. Indeed, this focused young lady is definitely one to look out for this year, as she is letting nothing stand in the way of building her empire in the cosmetics and accessories business. In fact, she has made a notable mark locally already. In an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News, she expressed that she was inspired to start her two businesses out of her undying love for fashion and beauty, ultimately leading to the kick-start of her first business in August 2020, under the name BelleÂme Beauty. With BelleÂme Beauty, Barker sought to provide cosmetics, ranging from pretty makeup palettes to brushes, and lipsticks and other beauty products that enable her consumers to look their best. Since she resides in Canada, her greatest challenge was not being physically present to distribute her products in Guyana. However, her mother, Marcia Lanferman, and her friend, Angel Byron, who also owns a small business, joined forces to package the items and ensure that they are delivered. “It has been wonderful. I’ve been getting immeasurable support from family and friends, for that I am forever grateful,” the 20-year-old shared. Another challenge was one imposed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, whereas there were obstructions with the courier service she uses. This, she said, led to the untimely arrival of her products in Guyana and consumers having to wait to have access to them. Her second business, “Cabana Accessories” kick started in January this year and has also obtained the attention of local consumers. The young entrepreneur always strives to present her business in a way that wins the heart of consumers, which gave her the ability to establish two businesses in less than a year. As she reflected on her journey leading up to being a young entrepreneur, Barker said, “I didn’t know where to begin. I had so many inspirations, the biggest two being my incredible love for makeup and fashion and a push in the right direction by one of my closest friends, Kayla Ross, who helped me make that start.” She further noted that she sees makeup and fashion as ways in which people express themselves and give the world glimpses of who they are or what they want people to know about them. She also believes that she can empower her consumers to do both of those things by providing the beauty products and accessories at an affordable cost. “Doing this in the most satisfactory way is what keeps inspiring me to provide these services,” Barker highlighted. She hopes to one day have her personal makeup and accessories collection, along with a physical store. Barker also shared her views on the role young entrepreneurs’ play in society. She said, “Young entrepreneurs would be able to aid in the growth of the economy due to the existing competition on the market, which enables young individuals like me to pave ways for innovative thinking, products and services. As young entrepreneurs, we should be able to create a new wave of job opportunities and so much more.” Barker also firmly believes that simply advertising does the trick in giving small business owners like herself more exposure and “when persons get incentives, it widens your customer base…a friend simply sharing on social media, telling someone about the business, posting items that you purchased from the business,” she added. Like other entrepreneurs like herself, she would like to see business expos tailored specifically to small business owners helping them to emerge into bigger entities, and develop their concepts better as they promote their products and services. Barker is the definition of an ambitious young woman with multiple interests and is going to extreme lengths to pursue all of them. Despite her love for fashion and makeup, she is still catering to her love for psychology at the University of Northern British Columbia.
