The Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC) yesterday says it has received a number of complaints against the LIAT airline.
“These complaints have been compiled and forwarded to the recently-appointed LIAT Administrator, Mr. Cleveland Seaforth, based on an announcement he made last week which stated that, “any person having a claim against the company whether liquidated, unliquidated, future or contingent, is required to present particulars of their claim in writing not later than August 15, 2020”.
The airline had reportedly halted flights to Ogle airport after the COVID-19 measures which saw the airports closed. The regional issues coupled with cash problems had further exacerbated the existence of the airline.
According to the consumer regulator, in the interest of time, the Commission advises consumers who were affected and have not yet filed a complaint with the CCAC to urgently submit their claims with accompanying supportive documents to the LIAT administrator on or before the deadline. Soft copies will be accepted.
These claims can be sent to Cnr. Factory Road & Carnival Gardens. P.O Box 3109, St. John’s, Antigua: email to administrator.liat@bdoecc.com: facsimile 268-462-8808.
Consumers who wish to contact Seaforth directly may call, 268-462-8868/9, CCAC said.
The airline is currently being reorganized.
There is interest shown by investors to the airline which is struggling to survive.
One entity had offered US$25 million investment for 51 per cent of the shares.
A decision had been taken that would allow St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados to turn over their shares in LIAT to Antigua and Barbuda for one EC dollar each.
The other shareholder – Dominica – has said it supports the efforts to reorganise LIAT, even as it provides licences to other carriers to serve the island.
According to the new reorganisational plan, Antigua and Barbuda is proposing reinvestment of EC$108 million with Antigua indicating that under the new plan it is prepared to underwrite up to 50 per cent of the required capitalisation.
The CCAC) was established in 2006 and became fully operational in 2010.
“The Commission functions objectively in executing the laws governing two acts, namely the Competition and Fair-Trading Act N0. 11, 2006 (CFTA) and the Consumer Affairs Act N0. 13, 2011 (CAA).
The Commission is an agency of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
