Norton Street murder PI… Magistrate briefed on death of witness

Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty was yesterday briefed on the findings of the Guyana Forensic Scientific Laboratory (GFSL) which confirmed the death of Collin Rodney.

Rodney was the main witness in the murder of his cousin, Marlon Seon Rodney, who was shot and killed in April 2019.
Osafo Grundell, called ‘Safo’, and James Fraser, called ‘Dab’, are on remand for the murder.
As the matter was recalled yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Police Prosecutor Dominic Bess who is representing the state in this matter, briefed the magistrate on the new developments in the case.
The court heard that based on the findings of the testing lab, the prosecution will now call 10 more witnesses.

Some of the statements for these witnesses were filed with the court.
The prosecutor also indicated that legal advice is currently being sought in the matter from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The matter was then adjourned to January 27, 2020 for the continuation of the murder PI. The men remain on remand until that time.
Collin’s burnt body was found in a car trunk at Letter ‘T’, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, on November 1, 2019. The GFSL disclosed its findings last week when officials handed over the results of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to the police.
The results came from DNA samples that were taken from Collin’s close relatives and from the remains two months ago.
Police have not indicated whether they have made any headway in identifying any suspects in Collin’s disappearance. However, investigators believe that the last calls he received may be crucial to enabling them to find his killers.

The torched remains of the car found

Kaieteur News understands that investigators have established that he had driven to the Rupert Craig Highway. He was reportedly alone in his vehicle. It is believed that he was responding to a phone call he had received.
Collin, along with his silver-grey Toyota Allion, vanished on October 25. His vehicle, with his burnt remains in the trunk, was found in his car trunk at Letter ‘T’, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara about a week later.
Collin disappeared on the same day that he was scheduled to testify in the murder PI of his cousin.
According to reports, Marlon Rodney, a 35-year-old taxi driver of 71 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was involved in an argument with three individuals.
The men reportedly pulled out guns and discharged several rounds at Rodney, who was hit in the left leg. A passerby was also shot in the process.
The injured men were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, as was the passerby who was treated and sent away. Rodney was admitted in a critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.
