As the campaign for the March 2, 2020 national and regional elections heats up, it is essential that we keep the campaign clean and free from intimidation and acrimony. The emphasis should be on issues and not personalities.
We are maturing politically as a people. Our democracy may not be perfect but we have come a long way since the days of rigged elections and ethnic tension of the magnitude of the tumultuous 1960’s. For that we deserve some credit as a society.
This is why it is so important that as politicians we refrain from language or activities that could be inflammatory. Political parties should be allowed to freely campaign in any part of the country. No area or constituency should be out of bounds. There should be no ripping off of flags or posters. In a democratic and competitive political environment, it is the message and not the messenger that is paramount.
As the elections fever becomes more pronounced in the days ahead, there is bound to be expressions of unbridled support for one or the other political camp. This is a natural phenomenon in any political contest. Such enthusiasm however must conform to the norms of civility and mutual respect.
Let a thousand ideas bloom! In the marketplace of ideas, no individual or party has a monopoly. In the final analysis, it is up to the Guyanese people to make their choices as to which from among the several parties make the case to earn their vote.
I look forward to a spirited campaign in the days ahead. Let our conscience and the good of our country be our guide as we cast our ballots, come March 2.
