Concerned residents of ‘B’ Field Sophia and surrounding communities are pleading with persons to desist from throwing sharp objects into the Lamaha Canal, popularly known as the “Blacka” located in ‘B’ Field Sophia.
This plea came about after two lads, aged 14 and 15, were admitted at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after sustaining injuries while swimming in the canal.
Relatives have identified the victims as 14-year old Kwesi Smith, of Lot 10 ‘B’ Field Sophia, and 15-Year-old Matthew Jacobs of Lot 21 ‘B’ Field Sophia.
Kaieteur News understands that on Friday around 15:30hrs, the teens and some other friends went to the ‘Blacka’ to enjoy the afternoon together when the accident occurred. Both of the teens sustained cuts and bruises to their body as a result of the incident.
In an interview, mother of Kwesi Smith, Yonette Smith, told Kaieteur News that she did not expect that such would have happened to her son.
“My son does always go to the ‘Blacka’ with his friends so that they could enjoy a swim and nothing like that has ever happened to my child. But the alarming thing is the ‘Blacka’ is not like how it used to be before. Persons continue to throw old fridge and freezers in the ‘Blacka’ and that is not right.”
Ms. Yonette is worried that her son may have lifelong scars due to his injuries.
