Original book illustrations in the form of acrylic paintings by Guyanese writer and artist, Harold A. Bascom (commissioned by Guyanese
journalist/writer, Michael Jordan for his supernatural novel, “Kamarang”), will be displayed at the “Black Brick Road Art Show” on December 15, 2019, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the DSW Studio, 2964 South Rainbow Drive, Suite #316, Decatur, GA 30034. Bascom’s illustrations, which will be featured in the new edition of the supernatural novel “Kamarang, (to be back on bookshelves on December 13) will be among a number of paintings by the four-time winner of the Guyana Prize for Literature, who currently lives in the USA where he continues to write, paint, and work as a writer’s coach and freelance book editor. The exhibition features 40 pieces of art in acrylics, oil, as well as pen and ink drawings. There will be performances by young musicians for the total enhancement of the showing.
The “Black Brick Road Art Show” explores a small group of themes, including the perils of shared spaces between humankind and nature; life in the inner cities of the USA; folklore figures of Guyana, South America; nudity as repression; illustrations for the Michael Jordan novel, “Kamarang”; and the beauty of black, natural hair.
One clear goal in this show is to give viewers a deeper understanding of each piece through conducted art tours of the exhibits.
Harold A. Bascom is a playwright, novelist, and artist based in Loganville, Georgia. He is a retired book illustrator of supplementary readers with the Ministry of Education, here in Guyana, where he also had an illustrious theatrical career as a producer/director and playwright. He has had solo exhibitions in libraries in Gwinnett County, Georgia, while continuing to write plays set in Guyana where he continues to be recognized as a writer and prize-winning playwright.
Damali Bascom, a collage artist, collaborates with her father, Harold Bascom, in the collection entitled “The Natural Hair Journey Series.” It is a bold group of portraits of beautiful black females adorned with natural hair made from surprisingly unique materials.
In a statement, Bascom said that whenever he creates—be it a pen and ink drawing, a painting, a short story, or a dramatic play—the result is ever linked to his consciousness evolved from a convergence of influences that are domestic, spiritual, social, economic, and geo-political. He further said that in his art, his goal is often to express things that move him as an avid observer of the human condition, and to illustrate the wonder he feels for nature and humankind’s interaction with it.
The “Black Brick Road Art Show” is sure to excite the gallery visitors with the depth of his interpretive pieces, many of which are dark and deep, out of which visitors are likely to emerge more enlightened than they came. Guyanese residents in the USA are encouraged to see it.
