Ranks in ‘B’ Division (Region Six-sub division two) are investigating the death of a 22-year-old man who reportedly slipped into a canal and drowned Wednesday afternoon.
Dead is Joseph Bownauth, a carpenter of Topoo Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Kaieteur News was informed by police sources close to the investigation that Bownauth left his home at Topoo with two other friends around 14:00 hrs Wednesday to go fishing at the Topoo pump station canal as usual.
However, tragedy struck when the carpenter reportedly fell into the canal where they were fishing.
It is understood that Bownauth could not swim and the canal was deep. His friends with whom he was, told police that Bownauth was standing on the bridge located across the canal when he lost his balance, slipped and tumbled overboard.
Bownauth, after falling into the water failed to resurface and the two friends said they became worried and alerted persons living nearby who immediately rushed out and assisted with the search for his body.
It was not until after an entire hour had passed that the carpenter’s body was recovered. Attempts to speak with the wife who is pregnant with their child were unsuccessful since she indicated that she was not in the best frame of mind to do so. Other relatives of the man were also reluctant to speak with the media.
Residents in the area said that another man reportedly fell overboard from the bridge and drowned in the said canal last year. They are claiming that the bridge is not safe enough for persons to linger on and are calling on the local authorities to fix it.
The recent drowning was reported at the Albion Police Station and investigations are in progress.
