Attorney-at-law James Bond told listeners in a recent interview with Kaieteur Radio of his proposals to target “school dropouts”.
He said as a member of A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for change (APNU+AFC) he had proposed that interventions must be taken by his government to target youths, especially youths who are school dropouts and youths who are now leaving schools.
Bond said that he was once a youth. He added like many youths he was not wealthy but worked hard to achieve his goals.
He recounted that long ago there weren’t many distractions, if a young man or woman dropped out of school, they were sent to work and taught a skill.
According to Bond, the world is different today. The world has become modernized with technology and youths think differently.
Bond added that as a result of the change youths of today who are dropping out of school have become idle and distracted. Rather than working or focusing on a goal, they become involved in crimes.
They become robbers and lose their youth, either by going to jail or being killed.
The lawyer iterated as part of his pro bono cases he would offer help to such youths with first time offences. However, he would tell them that “I don’t want to see you here again”.
Bond said that it is a fact that most of the delinquents are youths and an intervention must be taken to eradicate or reduce the reality.
He also encouraged listeners that it is something of concern, and even if the government does not make an intervention, then it must be Guyana’s responsibility to intervene.
The attorney explained that the matter is so serious that Guyanese must be passionate to intervene or make interventions without the government to target these school dropouts.
Such an intervention, he says, will not only save these youths but it will serve to prevent criminal activities or significantly reduce the levels.
