Yesterday at Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Boardroom the 2019 Cricket Guyana Inc. SBF Petroleum Jaguars 50-over League was launched. The eight-team 50-over Franchise tournament was first played in 2015 and Essequibo are the defending champions.

Dorwain Bess, CEO and Founder of the Petroleum importers which has been in existence for five years, explained the company, located at 350 East Street, North Cummingsburg, sponsored this tournament since its aim is to aid in the development of youths.
Bess, who lived in the USA, said when he saw the response for Guyana Amazon Warriors in this year’s CPL T20 showed what cricket means to Guyanese and how it has the power to unite the Nation.
“We are happy to partner with the CGI and we intend to be here for a while” Bess added. Treasure of CGI, Anand Kalladeen said this tournament is used to select the Guyana Jaguars teams for Regional competitions.
“CGI thanks SBF Petroleum for their timely support of Guyana’s cricket. Due the Franchise cricket Guyana Jaguars has been able to win the Regional First-Class tournament for the past five years” Kalladeen said.
“This 50-overs Franchise tournament which runs from October 13-24 and we have not won the Regional 50-over in long time and it is hoped that this year we could regain the 50-over title” the CGI office disclosed.
Defending Champions Essequibo, led by Anthony Adams, face-off with Leon Johnson’s Georgetown tomorrow at Bourda. In the other first round games, East Coast battle West Berbice at Lusignan, Lower Corentyne face East Bank at Albion and West Demerara oppose Upper Corentyne at Port Mourant.
Guyana has not won the Regional 50-overs title since they captured the 2005 KFC Cup when they beat Barbados in fading light at Bourda and this year will hope to take their 10th 50 overs title. This year’s Regional Super-50 is scheduled from November 6 in St Kitts and Trinidad.
Guyana Jaguars face the West Indies Emerging Players which has been added the tournament, on November 7 at the Brian Lara Academy in Trinidad. They then oppose Trinidad’s Red Force at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad on November 9. (Sean Devers)
