Lack of law and order in Our Nation

DEAR EDITOR,

It is clear that the governance of Guyana is in need of a stronger and more effective judicial system which supports the transparent implementation of the rule of law.
A number of years ago I had applied for land, which was subsequently taken without due process by one of today’s presidential candidates primarily as a result of his influence at the time of application.
In another matter the High Court ruled in my favour for the eviction of a squatter on my property, a ruling which the squatter continues to circumvent with the help of influential friends. Also when given judgement in my favour against a hooligan that assaulted me, the warrant for arrest and enforcement of the payment by the court gets circumvented due to bribes and corrupt connections.
The lack of a trustworthy system for law and order diminishes key factors that deter criminal activity and gives investors pause when considering placing capital within our borders. Those old enough may remember the difficulties that came about via embargoes after the nationalization of foreign industry in the early part of our country’s independent history.
We should as a country ensure that the legal system remains impartial, transparent and effective in the execution of the laws of the nation, thus providing the confidence in, and the perception and true experience of an effective system of law and order which will encourage both foreign and local investment in our nation’s economy throughout and beyond the election cycle. This is the best way to garner continuous investment growth that is secure and independent of the political party in power at the time of investment.
It is my hope that the various organizations, which support our system of law and order and span from the legal fraternity to the police ranks, will purge themselves of corrupt members and practices that weaken the law and order of Our Beautiful Guyana.
