Ideology vs. Non-Action – Students of the University of Guyana

DEAR EDITOR,

I choose to use these few lines to get my message over to the beloved students of the University of Guyana. Hopefully, I’ll manage to bring to light some reasons as to why things are the way they are (good or bad).
The only wish of most if not all of the students belonging to the institution, is to finish or complete their studies at the University. Their thoughts are strictly academic. Outside of new friends they would have met or are meeting, they will miss nothing about the University when their studies are completed – sadly. Nobody will dispute that. It is a growing ideology throughout campus (driven, by and large, by an administration intended on bringing change to us in its own time, sometimes not even the change we wish to see or have demanded).
The second part of this ideological belief that things won’t change in the areas we wish to see them change is our actions or non-action. Many of us are not united on this front. Let me elaborate. We don’t come out to the various Student Society campaigns and show our support for candidates suitable enough for leading us the students, effectively and efficiently. What happens in this case, when the Student Society doesn’t appear to be representing us or our interests (in some cases) we can’t even hold them accountable or feel guilty to do same.
The second part of our action or non-action is our disunity displayed when we are seeking cooperation to have a few administrative changes. This disunity stems from a lot of minimal attitudes such as a personal dislike for the leaders of a movement, lack of belief in the case, or simply a disbelief that admin will welcome this new initiative that is being talked about or targeted.
But this is where we are wrong; our physical support is needed because even if we the administration do nothing, they will notice the support that such movement has managed to garner. Sharing our plights with meaningful supplies of solutions via social media can work also.
Lastly, as the semester comes to an end and we go back to our individual lives, let us put together a plan with ways in which we can make the university a great place, working in conjunction with the various administrative offices in the execution of these initiatives.
Let us carefully evaluate any potential leader of the Student Society that we know will work in the best interest of the students when selected, and not vote for friends or faculty members.
