Bubbly, yet classy are two words rightfully chosen to describe Mary Crawford of No.1 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Born in the year 1919, Ms Crawford celebrated her 100th birth anniversary with family and friends at her home on Friday and appeared in excellent spirits when this publication spoke with her.
Hugging her petite figure was a crisp white gown, adorned with silver sequence. Her elegant look for her special day was complimented with a gorgeous tiara, a look fit for a queen! Many of her relatives flew in from across the world to be with her on that day, thus making it one to remember. As she made her way to the couch while her relatives were busy tying up last minute preparations to begin the celebrations, she sat and talked a bit about her life leading up to Friday.
The centenarian who had 10 other siblings with only two surviving, said she felt extremely happy to know that all her family came together for her and gleefully said while breaking out into uncontrollable laughter, “I married and never get so big celebration”. She added that she could not have envisioned living so long but credits the almighty and simple living for her long life.
“The lord kept me going so long until today, I don’t forget it. I live a decent life, anyone of my nieces I teach them how to live, live decent”.
As she smiled her way through the interview she mentioned that she can still do most things like cooking, a few chores and walking about the home and yard but she gets “a little pain here and there” coupled with a not so keen vision. She also noted that she cannot hear well but this does not hold her back from doing what she has to do on a daily basis.
“I never go through a lot of sickness like to go to the doctor and hospital and so, I live good”, Crawford said.
She told Kaieteur News that she travelled a lot during her earlier years and did a lot of sewing and craft making. This was among her most cherished talents that was eventually passed on to her nieces.
“I travelled all over the country and teach girls to do sewing, handicraft and so forth. I can’t remember the exact years I started, but it was a long time ago”, she said.
According to her, she got married at the age of 17 and that marriage lasted for just seven years,
She never remarried and did not have any children but she has a puppy that keeps her happy.
Her advice to the youths while chuckling is to “Live good and stay away from police, don’t do wrong things so police can hold you”.
Celebrating the day with her also on Friday was Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge and Prime Minister’s wife Seeta Nagamootoo.

(Kaieteur News) – There is no question that Guyanese would have noticed the brooch worn by Delcy Rodríguez during her recent visits to Grenada and Barbados.
