A 65 year old grandmother who was suspected to be a drug dealer and was under surveillance by the police has been arrested and jailed. The woman and her nephew were arrested during a police operation on Monday last.
Sharon Spencer of Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of Trafficking.
According to Police Prosecutor Inspector Bernard Brown, between 14:35 and 15:30 hours, on the day in question, the police conducted a cordon and search operation on the woman’s premises at the above address. During the search, the cops opened a red Ice Cooler, which contained what appeared to be leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant.
The woman and her 20 year old nephew Nicholas Spencer who were in the house were told of the offence arrested and taken into custody.
The substance was tested and weighed and found to be 1344 grams of marijuana.
In court, Spencer pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 years in jail and fined $2.2M.
Her nephew pleaded not guilty and was placed on $300,000 bail.
