Bandits shot at a car belonging to an Assistant Superintendent of Police and one suspect escaped with his firearm and cell phone, during a brazen attack on Monday night at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
But the rank, reportedly with assistance from residents, managed to subdue one of the robbers and retrieve a gold chain and band that the man had taken.
Police yesterday said that they now have both suspects in custody and have recovered the victim’s firearm and jewellery.
They have also recovered a Force-issued handgun that was stolen from another rank last Saturday. A release stated that the firearm was found yesterday in a heap of garbage in South Ruimveldt.
Kaieteur News understands that at around 18.00 hrs on Monday, the assistant superintendent of police, who is stationed at the Sparendaam Police Station, drove into Granville Park, Beterverwagting, and stopped to speak to a friend.
It was then that two men, one of whom was reportedly armed with a handgun, held the rank at gunpoint.
A source said that the men relieved their victim of a gold chain, band and cell phone. Kaieteur News understands that the rank drew his licenced 9mm pistol, but the weapon fell and one of the men picked it up. The men allegedly shot at the policeman’s car, shattering the window at the driver’s side.
One of the men then fled with the stolen firearm. However, the policeman reportedly managed to hold on to the second robber. Some residents helped to subdue the suspect, who still had the policeman’s jewellery. He was taken to the Vigilance Police Station for questioning.
On Saturday, a young policeman sustained a broken limb and other injuries after a group of men assaulted him and stole his service pistol. The incident occurred in a night club in Second Street, Alberttown.
