The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has apologized to passengers of the MV Sabanto, which experienced hydraulic failure on November 24, 2018.
According to the Ministry, it was informed that on arrival at the Parika stelling, the ramp of the MV Sabanto had malfunctioned.
On inspection by the Transport and Harbours Mechanical Engineer and engine clerks, it was observed that the piston and pressure spring were dismantled in the hydraulic block, resulting in the halting of the ramp.
According to the Ministry, the ramp is currently working; the problem has since been rectified.
“The Ministry would also like to acknowledge all received complaints regarding the lack of information relayed to and communication with the passengers during this incident, the state of the onboard vessel facilities and other issues experienced by passengers,” it was disclosed.
The Ministry also said it has issued instructions to the necessary authorities to ensure regular inspections and continued upkeep of all offered facilities to passengers.
“The priority of passenger safety, comfort and welfare remains tantamount to all operations under the purview of the Ministry. In this regard, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and the management and staff of the Transport and Harbours Department wish to extend its appreciation for the patience and understanding of the passengers, and apologises for any inconvenience caused.”
The Chinese-built ferries were placed into service in 2012 running to service the Essequibo Islands, Parika and Supenaam.
