Dear Editor,
I am not an economist or an account nor a businessman so I need someone to clarify for me the situation of the Berbice Bridge,
I read the bridge is making billions in losses. I learnt that there was no maintenance. With no maintenance, I am wondering whether by the time it is taken over by the government, it might be a sinking bridge.
So they demanded a four-time increase in toll so as to make a profit. Then, and this is what I do not understand, they indicated that they wanted an extension of the time and they would leave the tolls where it is. Well it is time for me to become confused.
Are they saying that they are willing to make losses for a far longer period? Wow! This is so generous of them. Are they thinking that in time, traffic would increase and so they would earn a profit? I guess to make up for a four time increase, the traffic would have to increase four times.
But even if this were possible, it would not be for a long time now. And by that time with no maintenance, the bridge would certainly be below river level.
Something does not smell right. The minority investors have to be receiving returns on their investment. I don’t believe in capitalist altruism especially when they are friends of the PPP.
I am tired of these secret agreements. It is time the contract be made public. The people of this county deserves nothing less. The contract was definitely drafted to ensure that the friends of the PPP reap excessive returns on their investments.
Release the contract to prove me wrong. It is time this nonsense stops. It is time a united people hold leaders accountable.
