Dear Editor,
The recent comments by Minister Gail Teixeira criticizing the statement issued by foreign envoys concerning the prolonged absence of parliamentary sittings bring back memories of an incident some twelve years ago.
On July 2, 2014, then Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Priya Manickchand delivered what later became infamously known as a “feral blast” at a United States Independence reception hosted by the outgoing U.S. Ambassador in Guyana. The remarks attracted widespread criticism and diplomatic unease at the time.
If memory serves me correctly, Minister Gail Teixeira was also present at that event when those remarks were delivered.
It is therefore difficult to ignore the parallels between that episode and the government’s present posture toward comments made by members of the diplomatic community.
Yours faithfully,
Roopnauth Hardyal
