Guyana is set to welcome more than 150 delegates to its shores in anticipation of the International Civil Aviation Authority’s Air Transport Meeting at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre from November 21.
The theme of this meeting is “Promoting Connectivity for Sustainable Air Transport Development”. President Granger will be giving the keynote address at the summit.
The International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) is a United Nations Specialised Agency of 192 member states.
This year’s air transport is purposed to maximize the economic benefits of aviation across the regions of CARICOM and Africa, as well as the world. The summit will explore how sectors of economies are influenced by, and benefit from air transport.
So far, 25 member states, including all CARICOM states, have confirmed their participation.
ICAO’s Secretary General, Fang Liu, is expected to address the opening ceremony on how different regions could develop their air transport mechanisms.
Also in attendance will be the Regional ICAO directors for the North and Central American Region, as well as South America.
The first day of the summit will explore harmonising regional transport regulatory framework, since airlines are made to comply with different regulations across regions. The meeting will explore the prospect of developing a standard set of practices and regulations to be set by ICAO for all regions.
They intend to discuss regional and global approaches to the liberalization of air cargo. With regards to the intersection of air transport and tourism; the onus will be placed on how member states could develop the two sectors with mutual benefit to each other.
Further, the summit will explore how the air transport sector could make itself a more attractive sector to facilitate investment, as would be particular needs of smaller nations such as Guyana to build/extend airports and airlines.
That aspect of the programme will be facilitated by regional and global banks, and other financial institutions.
The delegates in attendance will be given tours across Guyana. Also planned are a cocktail reception on November 21 and a gala dinner on November 22.
The Civil Aviation Authority has offered Guyanese the opportunity to promote their goods, services and art at the conference.
