Following the successful staging of the Guyana Open tournament last Sunday, golfers will again be in action on Saturday when the Lusignan Golf Club hosts the 13th annual MACORP tournament.
The tournament, which is expected to attract some 50-60 players, was launched yesterday at the MACORP office 26 Providence, East Bank Demerara. It will be played in the 0-9, 10-18 and 19-28 flights.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of MACORP Guillermo Escarraga said he is looking forward to a successful tournament and they are happy to sponsor it once again. “We have been working with the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) throughout the year and we have seen the development of the sport in Guyana. This year we decided to throw our support behind the club because it is evident that there is a lot of potential,” he added.
He acknowledged that there were some challenges due to the conditions of the course but that has improved considerably. “This year we are happy to express gratitude to the members of the executive committee of the Golf Club and its President Aleem Hussain for putting out the work in making sure that the course playable as it has been so for the entire year.”
Escarraga stated that the golfers have improved tremendously and the fact that there have been some good scores in the Guyana Open, which was a tremendous success, bear witness. He spoke highly of Avinash Persaud who copped the male overall title, adding that they are happy that the golf community is able to improve and will extend their support.
“Golf is a sport that brings about the best in every player and we have placed a lot of emphasis in this tournament. It’s going to be a fantastic event and we hope that golfers turn out in their numbers. We have a lot of prizes up for grabs, it’s going to be an exciting tournament and we hope to see some good performances.” He thanked the members of the media for their coverage.
Hussain expressed gratitude to MACORP for their input, adding that their relationship which started 13 years ago has evolved into more than just a corporate partnership. “When I took over as president I approached the company for assistance to upgrade the golf course which was under water and without hesitation they decided to support with their machinery, shortly after the course was transformed into one of the most beautiful courses in terms of preparation and drainage. We were then able to play golf every day without interruption.”
Hussain pointed out that this year has been the greatest for golf in Guyana and this will be the biggest tournament MACORP has ever pulled off.
He said that they are looking forward to teach the game to youngsters and will remain committed to see the growth of the game in Guyana.
Tee off time is 12:30hrs.
