A mini bus driver was yesterday remanded after being accused of raping a disabled woman.
Sherwin Reynolds, 44 of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He is accused of raping a 21-year-old speech-impaired woman who was allegedly joyriding in his bus.
Reynolds was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on April 19, last, at Timehri, East Bank Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a 21-year-old without her consent.
The matter was held in-camera.
According to information, on the day in question the woman was a passenger in the defendant’s bus which was destined for Timehri.
While at Timehri the woman allegedly refused to exit the bus and returned to Georgetown with the bus driver.
It was reported that the woman travelled back to Timehri and on that trip the bus driver drove to an unknown location where he parked his bus and raped the young woman.
The defendant then put the woman out the vehicle and she made her way home where she conveyed to her parents what had transpired.
The matter was then reported, an investigation was carried out and the bus driver was arrested for the offence.
A confrontation was held between the bus driver and the woman and she pointed him out as the person who raped her.
Police Prosecutor, Simone Payne opposed to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature and prevalence of the offence.
The Prosecutor also cited the penalty the offence attracts and the fact that the victim is disabled.
The Prosecutor objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on October 10 for report.
