These days, de older yuh get, de bigger de position yuh getting. Retirement looking more and more like one ah dem old-fashioned words that nobody in government remember. Long time, when yuh reach certain age, people would tell yuh, “Boss, tek yuh pension and go home.” Today, dem telling yuh, “Boss, tek another portfolio.”
Dem boys seeing people holding down big positions who body sending dem messages dat even WhatsApp can’t translate. Knees complaining, eyesight on vacation, hearing selective and hand shaking like if dem trying to catch a mosquito. But ask dem if dem ready to retire and dem does look at yuh like yuh insult dem mother.
“Nah, man. I still got plenty to contribute.”
Dem boys would like to know: contribute to what?
Because sometimes dem boys watching some ah dem old hands on de job and wondering if dem still working or if de office just keeping dem around as historical artifacts.
And dat does remind dem boys of de old lady who call she neighbour one day and ask fuh help with a puzzle.
“I can’t figure out how fuh put dis thing together,” she complain.
De neighbour ask, “Wha’ it supposed to be when yuh done?”
“A rooster,” de old lady say. “It got de picture right here pon de box.”
So de neighbour sit down, study de pieces, turn dem over, look at de picture and scratch she head.
After five minutes she tell de old lady, “Girl, no matter how we try, we can’t make a rooster outta these pieces.”
De old lady look confused.
De neighbour tell she, “Forget de rooster. Let’s just put de corn flakes back in de box.”
Talk half. Leff half.
