Dear Editor,
Just as oil, sports and youth development have the will to rise in Guyana, sports, games and physical fitness have been a vital component of our civilization, as evident from the existence of the highly evolved system of yoga and the vast range of highly developed indigenous games, including martial arts.
The intrinsic linkage between sports and games and the human quest for excellence was recognized ever since the inception of human civilization, reaching its epitome in the Greek civilization, which was the progenitor of the Olympic movement. As stated in the Olympic character, Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind.
So also is spirituality, based on the complete control of body and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympicism seeks to create a balance and rounded individual development. Sports and physical activity have positive effects on both individuals and society in general. There is no clear distinction , between the intrinsic value of physical activity and the social significance of sport.
Sport at all levels is important for both those who participate and many people around them. The value and effect of playing sport is the primary reason, why the state provides funding for sporting activities. Support for voluntary membership based sports clubs, is important for the maintenance and development of a comprehensive , strong range of various local activities.
In closing a well maintained sports facilitiy is needed in Guyana, so that as many people as possible can play sports and engage in physical activity. It is also very important that facilities reflect the population’s activity profile.
Yours Sincerely.
