Dear Editor,
In Jonah chapter 3 and 4, God sent Jonah to warn the people of Nineveh of His displeasure. In the end, an entire city repented and destruction was averted. It may not be okay to suggest a day, perhaps a week or month of repentance for Guyana, for in suggesting this, I am saying that imperfection exists, furthermore, that sin abounds in the land. What a dreadful creature I am!
However, there may be one Guyanese who asks: well what are my sins?
Here are a few of my observations:
(1) One year ago, persistent taunting of a teenager about his sister by a taxi driver led to the demise of the taxi driver. Five days ago (July 27), a young man choked a five-year-old and stabbed a nineteen-year-old. Take a look at our domestic crimes. We are a distracted society. Teenagers and elders alike curse and offend each other. Arrogance and disrespect are orders of the day.
(2) Our roadways have become race tracks. Pedestrians, old and young, are falling victims, and some guilty perpetrators are paying their way out. The poor continue to be oppressed. Justice runs from them.
(3) Respected citizens are stealing from the country’s treasure boxes. These smartly- dressed professionals continue to take at their leisure, robbing other citizens of their due.
(4) We have lost originality and creativity, influenced to a great extent by North America.
(5) We have fifteen holidays a year, yet we remain tired and burnt-out. A requested document from the public service can take weeks to be prepared. Our favourite words are ‘come back tomorrow.’
(6) We operate without clear protocols and regulations. The general public remains unaware of how to access service from the government. Some weeks ago a woman from Berbice (I believe) was asking about the steps in acquiring help from the Social Protection Ministry. Her plea was broadcast on television.
(7) Any critic of any government service, Government official or person in authority is dismissed from duty, their dwelling place is omitted from scheduled remedial road works, or they receive their benefits long after the due date. Is this Godly?
(8) We are quick to dismiss criticisms, failing to use these to propel us forward.
Here is now my challenge to all Guyanese: spend time praying about that thing in/about Guyana which makes you angry to the bone. Then simply do your part in not falling into the trap of doing the same. To my Atheist friends: be the change that you seek. May the Lord grant us the desires of our heart according to His will for Guyana.
