Guyana’s Keevin Allicock lands a blow on El Salvador’s Christian Jimenez during his quarterfinal bout yesterday.
It was triple trouble for Guyana in Colombia yesterday as both boxers in Keevin Allicock and Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis suffered defeats in their respective quarterfinals matches, while the men’s hockey team were needled by reigning champions Cuba in their semifinal encounter.
Keevin Allicock lost his quarterfinal match in the 56 kg (Bantamweight) by three votes to 2 against El Salvador’s Christian Jimenez.
Allicock began the first round a bit wobbly but managed to pull himself together and land some telling blows before the referee deducted a point for an illegal hit on his opponent. Although it was a close match, Allicock was the busier of the two opponents throughout the three rounds.
Superman Lewis was timid in his light welterweight (64kg) fight against Mexican Roberto Zarinana-Gomez. A huge chunk of the bout Lewis was seen either backing away or on the ropes against the Mexican. Coach Terrence Poole was heard giving instructions to Lewis during the first round interval to stay off the ropes but his lack of lateral movement didn’t help his cause as the Mexican eventual won the fight 4-1.
In hockey, Guyana men had lost agonizingly by 1-0 to defending Central America and Caribbean (CAC) champions, Cuba. Midfielder Carlos Consuegra was the hero for the Spanish speaking nation with his successful strike, just on the stroke of the second quarter in the 16th minute.
After that, the Guyanese attacked with intent trying to get a goal to level but didn’t find any success as Cuba held their composure the quell all of the Guyanese attacking threats.
In their first appearance in the CAC games after decades, the Guyana men’s team still have a chance of winning bronze when they face the loser of Mexico versus Trinidad and Tobago semifinal, tomorrow. (Calvin Chapman)
