The Guyana Bank of Trade & Industry (GBTI) has always been a good corporate Citizen, especially with their commitment to Sports development, and yesterday at GBTI Tennis Court in Bel Air the Bank launched its ninth Annual GBTI Tennis Open.
GBTI’s Public Relations and Marketing Manager, Pamela Binda told the gathering that the Bank continues to stand resolutely behind the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) and was pleased to again sponsor this tournament.
“Our association with this tournament began in the 1980s before returning in 2010. Since then we have been supporting the GLTA every year by sponsoring this tournament,” said Binda, who has been with the Bank for the last three years.
She noted that GBTI’s main focus is on education but was quick to point out, sports and education work together.
“Sports provide a forum to develop a well-rounded person and it is very important in the life of any child. We are satisfied with this partnership and will continue supporting this tournament since we have seen the benefits derived from it,” Binda concluded.
Cristy Campbell, one of the GLTA’s Vice-Presidents and one of the leading players on the local circuit, thanked GBTI for their continued support of Tennis and for making each tournament bigger and better than it was.
Robin Singh, another Vice-President who heads the Guyana Baseball Association, said that nothing happens in Sports without sponsorship and was looking down the line partnering with GBTI.
“A child without some area of sports in their life is an incomplete individual and I encourage everyone to get involved in Tennis or any other sports and reap the benefits of a long and healthy life,” Singh encouraged.
Director of Sports Christopher Jones applauded GBTI for providing the GLTA members the access of their beautiful Club for tournaments and training.
“The NSC promotes sports but at a time when facilities for Tennis are not readily available, we commend GBTI for supporting the GLTA by providing a Court for them to compete,” said Jones who reminded that soon the Lawn Tennis Court at the National Gymnasium will be completed.
Campbell informed that due to the inclement weather the tournament was postponed, adding that she was pleased that the competition finally commenced yesterday.
Approximately 52 players will be in action in Boys, Girls, Ladies, Men, Over-35 and Over-45 categories with eight matches being played each day ending under lights in the evenings.
Campbell also said that the GBTI also has a Court at Diamond on the East Bank where a ‘Summer’ Camp will be held shortly.
The Director of Sports made the first serve to officially launch this year’s GBTI Tennis Open.
Apart from Campbell, Anthony Downes, Godfrey Lowden, Africa Gentle and Heimraj Raual are some of the top players in the various categories. (Sean Devers)
