Once you have bad-minded people within the government, it will get a bad name. You cannot play with mud and not get your hands dirty.
The government is filled with persons whose hands are dirty. But there is one person whose hands appear clean but that is only because someone else has been stirring the mud.
Power is being abused in Guyana for narrow, selfish purposes. Certain politicians are settling their own scores and that of their friends.
There are persons within Government – and they know who they are – who believe that they are more powerful than God. If they do not like you, they rain down fire and brimstone your way. But as old people say, “Even the longest rope has an end. Nothing lasts forever and eventually their masks will fall off and people will see their true colours.
They can pretend but they cannot, forever hide their evilness. Time catches up eventually with these band-minded scoundrels who blatantly set out to victimize others.
If they do not like you, then not only you will suffer but so too will your family and friends. They play proxy politics. If they want to hurt you, they will get at your friends and family.
This happened to Kaieteur News under the PPPC when certain persons were upset that their well-laid plans were exposed. The PPP reacted venomously against the Kaieteur News, the collateral damage extending to even to the innocent.
The same thing is happening within the present government. A high-level government official is holding malice against this newspaper and in order to get even, is going after even the relatives of persons connected with this newspaper. This high-level individual is using his influence to be hurt persons. It is a sad commentary of what happens when you put the morally enfeebled into positions of authority.
But this is not new in Guyana. This is how political power has always been exercised in Guyana. It is always about some getting what they want, regardless of the price to be paid by others.
The actions of this high-level commissar are spineless and petty. They reflect a wicked and evil mind, one that is so insecure and heartless that there is utterly no compunction in being ruthless and in hurting persons with whom there is no quarrel.
A change in government has not changed the ugly culture of the exercise of power. A change in government therefore has not halted the vendetta and conspiracies. The actors have changed but the script remains the same.
This problem will not go away with any new government. Abuse of power is an inherent trait of a State machinery, which assumes too much authority. While the vendettas are taking place, the excessive influence and power, which that person has because of the state machinery, means that only a diminution of that power will lead to a resolution. And that domination requires a reduction in the power of the State.
The State is an albatross around the necks of the population. People are forced to bow to authority for face the consequences of being harassed, victimized and dispossessed.
The offender makes use of authority in order to have others do mischief. In that person’s name, people are hurt by others doing that person’s dirty work. This is sycophancy at its best.
The time has come for exposure, full exposure. No one should be allowed to use a position of authority within the State to victimize others. This is unacceptable in a democratic state and professionals who are being involved in such vendettas should refuse to participate.
Unfortunately, many of those professionals owe their positions to political loyalty and sycophancy. Many of them who are inveigled to wash the dirty linen of their masters are functioning beyond their level of competence. And so, they will do as they please, so long as they cannot be held personally liable for their actions.
