New Ambassador of Cuba to Guyana, Mr. Narciso Reinaldo Armador Soeorro presenting his Letters of Credence to President David Granger in the presence of Minister of State, Mr. Joseph Harmon.
DEAR EDITOR,
The AFC had two sets of comments (one from the Party and one from AFC Leader Raphael Trotman) after the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled to uphold the two-term limit in our Constitution. The PNC had one statement. Then over the past several days we have had more and more people from the government side focusing on Bharrat Jagdeo.
It is this debate that is interesting.
With all the talk about how terrible Jagdeo is, you would think that the Caribbean Court of Justice ruling would have ended the sometimes hostile commentary you see in the newspapers. He cannot run so be done with it.
But a friend of mine, in another Jagdeo debate, pointed out to me that the focus on Jagdeo continues because, the APNU-AFC Government cannot do anything about the fact that he is still around and active in local politics.
Jagdeo himself has said that he will be around. He said he will be on the campaign trail leading to the 2020 Elections. He said he will be part of the next government. The supporters of the PPP/C have the reassurance that his skills and experience will be available to the next PPP/C government.
From where I stand, it would seem that this is what irks the government side so much. The Caribbean Court of Justice win is only a half-win of sorts, because they cannot altogether get rid of Jagdeo.
For all that the government side has said about him being terrible, you know that it is all shallow comments, because they are fighting so hard to get him out of the picture. All you have to do is read the letters in the Guyana Chronicle and you would understand how hard they are fighting to get him out of the picture.
But like I said earlier, Jagdeo has said he is not going anywhere and the PPP/C supporters have that reassurance.
That said, it is clear that the debates will continue. But will it work? Or is the government side hurting itself? The fact is that Guyanese have seen past the talk from the government side about Jagdeo being the ‘devil’ himself, while at the same time trying their hardest to ensure that he is not a factor in the 2020 Elections. And they ask why. It is not too hard to come to the logical conclusion.
Regards
Anson Paul
