Cops to face departmental charges for escape of female drug accused
An investigation appears to have cleared four policemen of sexually assaulting a female drug accused at the Timehri Police Station.
But the ranks have been implicated in causing the woman to escape and are to be charged departmentally.
The police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) conducted the investigation after the woman, who was recaptured, alleged that ranks had sexually assaulted her.
The 38-year-old accused had disappeared from the Timehri Police Station on May 8, last, while under arrest pending charges for narcotics trafficking.
The woman alleged that the ranks freed her after she was raped.
The woman was eventually recaptured at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.
She was first arrested on May 6, at Soesdyke, allegedly with some 400 grammes of marijuana in her possession.
She was taken to the Timehri Police Station and kept in handcuffs, while arrangements were made to transport her to the East La Penitence Police Station.
However, because of a shortage of vehicles at Timehri, she remained at the station until Tuesday, May 8, when she was scheduled for court.
She escaped in the early hours of the morning.
