Police ranks led by Assistant Superintendent Elton Davidson once again did a splendid job at the opening of the June 2018 Criminal Session of the Berbice Assists.
The session opened on Tuesday with the usual splendor in front of the Berbice High Court building on Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam.
Davidson led a 28-strong police contingent that comprised ranks of the police ‘B’ Division and a police military band.
Inspector Michael Newland was the parade Inspector.
The police contingent marched from Police Headquarters at Coburg Street and Strand, New Amsterdam along Strand to the High Court.
The salute and inspection were taken by Justice Brassington Reynolds who is presiding in the Criminal Assizes in Berbice. He was accompanied by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall. They were escorted by ‘B’ Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Lyndon Alves and Assistant Superintendent Shri Laljit. New Amsterdam Mayor Winifred Haywood was also in attendance.
Other senior ranks including Deputy Commander Superintendent Wayne De Heart, Woman Assistant Superintendent Yonette Stephen, Inspector Ramnauth and Sergeant Marlon O’Donahue accompanied the parade.
When the session was called to order, Justice Reynolds welcomed the jurors’ present.
The jail delivery presented to the court showed that there are 33 awaiting trial. Twenty-nine are for murder, two for attempted murder and two for Sexual Penetration.
However, of the 33, indictments have been received for only 10.
Two of those awaiting trial for murder want to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
All 33 are requesting an early trial.
