It was the spring of 2005. Along with my wife, I attended a conference of the International Communion of Charismatic Churches, (ICCC) which was held at the then Wyndham Hotel, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
There were a few Guyanese present, including Bishop Juan Edghill. After dinner on the evening of the first day; there was a gathering of some folks at a table, including Bishop Edghill. I had never met the Bishop prior.
He was very vociferous. He was “Holding court” on Guyanese politics. Having left Guyana in 1972, I was very interested in what was being said. So, I left my wife and the couple we were dining with, and pulled alongside to hear the conversation. He was unleashing a tirade against the PNC.
I was a very active member of the YSM, prior to leaving Guyana, my interest level in what was being said, was very high.
I asked him why he was so bitter. He replied that his mother was a member of the PNC executive, and they treated her badly. He said that he would do all in his power to embarrass and defeat the PNC, because of their mistreatment of his mother.
Below, I will try to chronicle some of our back and forth, that evening.
Me: Where is your mother now?
Response:“She lives in New York.”
Me: Why can’t we all as Guyanese sit, talk and resolve our differences?
Response: “No! I intend to be the Prime Ministerial candidate for the PPP.”
Me: Do you know and understand the history of the PPP? Are you aware of their racial victimization? Do you know of the bombings and murders of innocent African Guyanese, at the hands of those folks?Do you know of the Son Chapman bombing?
I remember ending my comments by reminding him, that,“leopards do not change their spots.”
Response:“I am not black.”“I am a Venezuelan. I changed my name.”
At this point, I thought I had heard enough; the brother was very loquacious. I returned to dining with my wife and our two ministry friends.
You may wonder why I am giving this information at this time. Well, I have been following current events in Guyana and I am somewhat aware of the recent, over the top posturing, of my brother in Christ.
Guyanese can be fickle and some may be swayed and misled by his utterings and actions. Take note!

(Kaieteur News) – In 1978, a movie was released by United Artistes. The Wild Geese was not a spectacular box office hit but given that it was in part an action movie, it did reasonably well to turn a small profit and to have a sequel. The plot was quite simple. It was about a group […]Jun 07, 2026
