-fence of Peter Ramsaroop torn down
An age-old problem of illegal structures along the city’s water supply canal is being tackled in an aggressive manner.
Yesterday, more than two weeks after taking down part of the structure of a property in the affluent Bel Air Park area, workers of the Guyana Water Inc (GWI) descended yet again, dismantling a huge zinc fence that took up almost 60-70 of the reserves.
The first property, seen from Sheriff Street, north of the Botanical Gardens, reportedly belongs to businessman and advisor to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Peter Ramsaroop.

The arrow at right is where the fence should have been, but instead it was at the one on the left. The problem appears to extend right down the Bel Air Park area.
The sprawling property with pool was supposed to be away from the reserves by at least 80 feet. However, the fence of the property was extended, leaving little space for excavators to manoeuvre to clean the Lama Canal.
The canal, which leads from the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) is the one that feeds the GWI Vlissengen Road facilities which process the water and then distribute to the city.
However, over the years, GWI has been complaining of illegal structures that are preventing maintenance.
In fact, GWI was fearful of garbage and other pollutants making their way to the waterway.
The problem extended right along the Campbellville area, with structures seen there.
Those illegal structures would also extend from the Sheriff Street to Vlissengen Road stretch in Bel Air, GWI officials told Kaieteur News yesterday.
GWI has been under pressure to up its quality with a number of actions already taken to ensure quality, management says.
With billions of dollars being expended, the city especially has been unforgiving when it comes to the service being offered by GWI.
