Yesterday, the Pele F.C. Alumni in their efforts to help youths advance and balance the combination between books and sports, donated over 2000 books and eight laptops to the National Library.
The Pele Alumni intend to empower youths while helping them to overcome poverty by building their self-esteem and ambition, through the power of sports.
Over the years, the club has been making an impact on youths through donations and educational campaigns.
According to Chairman of the alumni, Denis Carrington, the club was started with intentions of giving back to Guyana and to help boost the confidence of youths, especially young males.
He proclaimed his disappointment when he came back to Guyana for the Alumni’s 40th anniversary and saw that only a small fraction of the boys in the football team, were in school. This motivated him to push for literacy programmes and other educational initiatives.
Mr. Carrington yesterday presented the books and laptops to the library board.
